The Canadian Rockies are located in Alberta, Canada and have much to offer any traveler. Whether you are on a budget or have money to burn, you will find enjoyment in the Canadian Rockies. Two of the most popular places in the rockies are Jasper and Banff. I prefer Jasper to Banff since Jasper is not as commercialized. Although both are beautiful, offering breathtaking sights and many activities. Winter activities include skiing, snowboarding, hiking, sleighrides, and ski-doo trips, snowshoeing. For skiing and snowboarding just visit any of the great ski lodges such as Marmot Basin, Sunshine Village, Lake Louise or Mount Norquay. I found the best skiing destination to be Marmot Basin.
It offers a variety of well-groomed slopes for every skill level. If you are an advanced skier, there is a run called ‘the knob’ an abundance of massive moguls; ski at your own risk. It seems warmer at Marmot as opposed to the other ski lodges, because of the basin, thus making your ski trip more enjoyable. There are fun ski-doo trips; you begin early in the morning and ride for half of the day. A warm lunch in a cozy cabin is provided, then you continue your trip until the end of the afternoon.
Hiking is an activity you can partake in any season, just dress appropriately. When hiking in the mountains always obey the signs, such as beware of bears etc. Do not attempt to feed wildlife. Some of the wildlife will approach because they are used to people, but do not feed them. It causes problems for the animals and the area. By feeding the animals it draws them to the tourist areas and they begin to rely on people for food. You have to be extremely careful with your food. It has to be packed away at night in your vehicle (preferably), since this can attract bears.
It is also recommended that you throw your garbage away at night in the large metal bins provided. There have been numerous bear attacks or bears rummaging through campsites.
Fun activities for spring and summer include horseback riding, raft trips, canoeing and again hiking. The horseback trips are fantastic; the guides are very friendly and well trained. When on the trips you get to see some fabulous sights, such as Pyramid Lake, Mt. Edith Cavell, and other points of interest. The horseback trips offer a variety of time slots. You can go for an hour or up to a week trip. I suggest if you are a beginner, start with the hour trip (your legs will be sore). The boating trips can also range from an hour to an all day excursion.
A great spot outside of Jasper is the ‘Miette Hot Springs’. You can go have a soak in the hot pools after a morning of hiking or riding to soothe your sore muscles. There is a great restaurant and quaint cabins available for booking.
If you are ever in Alberta, Canada be sure to visit these places and partake in the activities, it will provide a memorable holiday.
