BIOGRAPHY
Julien Hartridge Green, novelist and playwright, was born in Paris, France to American parents. His mother died when he was fourteen. He was educated in Paris and the University of Virginia. Green converted to Catholicism when he was fifteen. He later became a Buddhist, but he returned to Catholicism in 1939.
Green published his first novel, MOUNT CINERE, when he was 26. He was awarded the Femina Bookman Prize for ADRIENNE MESURAT (THE CLOSED GARDEN) and the Harper Prize for LEVIATHAN (THE DARK JOURNEY). He was the first person of American parentage to be elected to the French Academy.
Julien Green died in Paris, France in 1998.
